the argument-from-complexity that it’s impossible to understand or take sides on israel/palestine because “the conflict goes back thousands of years” is a cheap trick that relies on racism and orientalism to work. for this to be convincing to you, you have to fundamentally think of middle eastern peoples and cultures as somehow uniquely antiquated. nobody who parrots this shit about israel and palestine would genuinely believe that skirmishes between the wielbark culture and marcomanni tribesmen in any way complicate the 1939 invasion of poland–for this to seem like an effective or convincing argument, you have to on some level buy into the classic orientalist perception that arab and jewish people are somehow ‘ancient’, modern relics who have not progressed through history like the rest of the world.
